How Many CCTV Cameras Does a Chennai Home Need?

27 October 2026 · 5 min read

The right number of CCTV cameras is not a fixed figure. It depends on how many ways someone can get into your property and which areas you want a clear record of. Too few cameras leave blind spots; too many waste money on overlapping views. Here is how we plan it during a site survey.

Start with the entry points

Walk around your property and list every way a person could enter: the main gate, the main door, a side or back door, a service entrance, the terrace door and any low boundary wall. Each entry point should be covered by at least one camera that can see a face, not just a figure.

Typical camera positions

AreaWhy it mattersCamera tip
Main gateEvery visitor and vehicle passes hereMount at a height that captures faces and number plates
Main doorDeliveries and visitors at close rangeA wide view, or pair with a video door phone

Side and back passagesCommon route for intrudersCover the full length of the passage
Terrace / staircaseAccess from neighbouring buildingsOne camera at the terrace door
Indoors (optional)Staff, elderly parents, childrenLiving area or hall only; respect privacy

Rough guide by property type

  • Apartment: usually one camera at the main door, or a video door phone instead.
  • Independent house: usually gate, main door, parking and one or two side passages.
  • Villa with a large plot: add cameras along the boundary wall, the garden and the terrace.

These are starting points. Corner plots, multiple gates and long boundary walls change the count, which is why we always confirm on site.

How much recording storage do you need?

Storage depends on the number of cameras, their resolution and how many days of footage you want to keep. Decide the number of days first, then size the hard disk to match. Most homes keep a few weeks of recording; businesses often need longer. Your installer should tell you exactly how many days your hard disk will hold.

IP or HD analogue cameras?

IP cameras give sharper images and smarter features such as person detection. HD analogue cameras are cost-effective for smaller set-ups. Both can be viewed on your phone. The right choice depends on your property and budget.

Do not forget maintenance

Cameras collect dust, angles shift and hard disks fail quietly. Many owners find out only when they need footage and it is not there. A CCTV AMC with scheduled checks keeps every camera recording.
